Known around the world for its
number of high-quality roller coasters and stationary rides, Ohio's amusement
ride industry continues to grow. ODA continues to ensure the safety of all
amusement rides within the state of Ohio; a staple of summertime entertainment.
Ohio boasts one of the best ride inspection programs in the country.
All inflatable amusement devices that meet the definition of an “Amusement ride”
as defined in ORC 1711.50 (A), whether located within a permanent structure or available as
portable rental unit(s) must, prior to operation, be inspected and licensed by the Ohio
Department of Agriculture, Amusement Ride Safety Division. The owners of these portable units
are issued annual permits at the conclusion of a successful annual inspection. Colored decals
are affixed to the inflatable unit indicating the current year of the licensure and permit issued.
Additionally, the owners/operators of these portable rental units are required to provide a “ride operator”
with each unit or units or train a responsible party(s) (minimum age of 16 years old) prior to leaving
the unit(s) at the rental location. The training must be written documentation signed by the trainer
and the trainee(s) indicating that the trainee(s) has been instructed and informed of the proper
operational procedures of the units as required by the manufacturer. You should always insist on being
shown proof of licensure when renting inflatable amusement rides.
